When a female dog is in heat, she may bleed for up to 21 days or more, but not more than 25days. If you are planning to breed her, you would have already picked a suitable male that will mate with her, and allow both she and this male to be together for nature to happen.

Around the first 10 days when she is in heat she will bleed more like menstruate and her vulva will swell and start giving off a sentence that is  enticing to the male dogs.

However most females will reject any male advances made towards them in this first 10 days and afterwards, within the second 10days of her heat, she might become receptive to the male dog because during this second 10 days, she might have stopped bleeding or might have only little drops of blood. Then mating will take place naturally.

How will I know my female dog is in heat

Female dogs that has attained sexual maturity fall in their heat period about every six months, and as stated above this heat period lasts for about 20 or 21 days. When you notice the vulva (outer part of the female genital) is slightly swollen and she has a blood like discharge which is pretty much like menstruation.

The period which your dog is supposed to be receptive to male dogs is around up to 10 days or more but the first 3 to 6 days she might not accept a mate until later, but she will definitely accept the male advances at some point.

After mating, will my dog stop bleeding?

After mating, you dog will not automatically stop being in heat, she will still be in heat for a few more days, and during this few more days of heat after mating, you should keep her away from other male dogs because she can still get pregnant for another dog while already pregnant with a litter for her first mate.

This is because while she is still in heat, even after mating once her vulva will still be swollen and she will still have her sent enticing to male dogs, this will not end until she is done with her heat period. Do remember to let her rest after mating by keep her away from other dogs and letting her sleep for a few hours especially if mating was planned.

Probably you are a first time breeder, and you want to know all the normal and abnormal things that happen with a dog concerning breeding, then No it is not normal for your dog to bleed during whelping. Of course there is going to be blood during labor, but not so much blood and even after giving birth, the amount of blood that would come out should be only little drops and nothing more.

If the mating was not planned, you have no need to worry about if she was in pain because she most likely wasn’t in pain. But in cases where the mating was planned, you will of course have the thought that what If she is in pain?

Normally, she should not be in pain because both of them are supposed to enjoy this encounter, but sometimes if the male dog was rough with her, or she doesn’t feel too comfortable she will definitely feel pain. And sometimes some dog owners will like to be present during the mating process and if you are among them and you notice your dog trying to pull free or break the contact, she is most definitely in pain.

Can a male and female dog mate when the female dog is not in heat?

Well NO, when a female dog is not in heat she will not have a sent enticing to male dogs, and when she does not have a sent enticing to male dogs, male dogs will not be attracted to her, and when a male dog is not attracted to a female dog, he will not make a move on her neither will she be receptive to the male dog.

Some dog owners tend to not have a single idea about when their dog is and is not in heat, trying to force a mate when your dog is not in heat will prove to be futile.
