When you go to the veterinarian regarding your dog’s smelly vaginal fluid, you will be asked lots of questions about any recent health issue, previously taken medication in the last few months, If your dog has been spayed or not, feeding habits, Sex activities, breading activities and so on.

After a dogs heat period (estrus) there can be increase in the amount of vaginal discharge (which can in a few cases be smelly) even when your dog is healthy.

The vaginal discharge may even be bloody, but this is a normal thing for a new mother and it may even continue for a few days or even a week more, but when the large number of discharges and the bleeding continue for longer, you should not hesitate to get medical attention for your dog, because she could have contacted an infection during child birth.

Most people do not know that there are up to 3 different holes present in the vagina, one of the holes is there for the passage of urine and when your dog urinates in a dirty place, bacteria can get into the urinary tract and cause infection.

In some situations the bacteria can also enter the vagina which will lead to cross-contamination of both the vagina and the urinary tract, and when this happens, there will be discharge of vaginal fluid which is sometimes bloody, purulent or yellowish urine that will be very smelly. When you take your dog to the vet, a sample of this vagina discharge will be taken with a cotton swab for identification of the bacteria under a microscope.

If it is an infection, it will be detected in the blood of your dog so a blood test will be done to know the seriousness of such infection by counting the number of her white blood cell. Further test will be done by the vet to make sure that the infection is not one to cause blood poisoning (septicemia) when it gets much in the blood stream of your dog.

Sometimes, your veterinarian may not be satisfied with whatever she has seen in the ultrasound and may want to see more clearly using an MRI or an x-ray machine, however, it may be expensive and you may be referred to other specialist for further examinations.
